  • Introduction

Our hero of the American Civil War (Company E, 45th Ohio Volunteer Infantry), Grandfather Russell was recovering in a medical camp when taken captive by rebel forces and marched in the middle of winter wearing only undergarments, suffering nearly total permanent hearing loss from the ordeal. He was named after a famous Methodist Episcopal missionary, the Rev. Russell Bigelow, then ministering to his parents' congregation in Ohio. Grandfather Russell's older brother, John Collins Mulford, was named after an earlier Methodist Episcopal minister, the Rev. John Collins, who served the same congregation. Grandmother Elizabeth, their mother, was apparently an avid convert.
