Man's body recovered from Stillhouse Hollow Lake
Published by Fox44News on October 1st 2015

This morning dive teams recovered the body of a man who fell into Stillhouse Hollow Lake while fishing on Wednesday morning.

The Bell Country Sheriff’s Department said, 62-year-old, Melvin Kennon of Harker Heights, was fishing with his elderly mother on a small boat when his cell phone fell into the lake.

Officials said Kennon tried to reach for it, but lost his balance and fell in. Officials said his mother saw him come up and then never resurface.

That’s when a nearby fisherman witnessed the commotion and called for help.

The Texas Game Warden and Morgan’s Point dive team responded to the call around 9 a.m. on Wednesday. Crews searched until sundown on Wednesday and continued their search at 8 a.m. on Thursday, October 1.

It was around 11:03 a.m. when they located his body at the bottom of the lake within the same proximity of where he fell in.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Lt. Game Warden, Billy Champlin, said the sonar found Kennon’s body 32 feet below the surface. Champlin said within just a couple of minutes of locating Kennon, divers were able to recover his body.

“We brought in a larger vessel this morning with the capability of having a towable-type sonar that could be dropped to a lower depth in the water to give us a more precise image,” Champlin said.
