    PARDEEVILLE — Merwin L. Allen, 81, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2015, at At Home Again Assisted Living in Rio, where he had resided for the last six months. Merwin was born Feb. 16, 1934, in Pardeeville, to Warren and Mary (Roberts) Allen. He graduated from Pardeeville High School in the class of 1952, and was active in sports and forensics. He worked at the Wyocena Co-op until July 1969 when he accepted employment with the state as a driver’s license examiner, a job he so enjoyed for 25 years before retiring in 1994. In June 1956, he married his high school sweetheart, Velda Fisher. To this marriage were born Lisa Allen of Pardeeville, Deb Allen of Rubicon, and Brenda (Steve) Johnson of Arlington. Merwin was a hunter education instructor for over 30 years, past president of the Pardeeville Fire District and served on the Wyocena Town Board. His spare-time hobbies included hunting and cutting wood. He made many friends supplying firewood to campers. He also enjoyed camping on his property in Vilas County and traveling. Dementia took away his ability to visit and tell stories, which he loved to do. He is survived by his wife; three daughters; one granddaughter, Kayla Knudson; sister, Amanda Daugherty; brother, Orlan Allen; one nephew and seven nieces, including a very special niece, Claudia Sampson; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roger; and sister, Janet. Memorial services will be held at noon Saturday at Smith Funeral Home in Pardeeville, with the Rev. Mark Brandel officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of services. Memorials may be made in his name to St. Jude Hospice Care, Wyocena Community Church and Friends of MacKenzie. A special thank you to the staff of At Home Again and St Jude Hospice for their care, love and patience. His family and friends for their concerns, prayers, visits and phone calls at this difficult time. He is now in a better place where he can again tell stories.
