Served in H Company 4th West Virginia Infantry during the Civil War. He enlisted as a private, but was later promoted to a LT. He participated in the siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi from May 18 to July 4, 1863. According to the Eleventh census of the United States of surviving soldiers, Michael was wounded in the left leg.
