Introduction

Michael Phillip Davies is the second child and second son of John Collin Davies 14th May of Mildura and Nola Jean Davies (nee Smythe) 18th October of Merbein. On 5th November 1988 Michael married Terry-Ann Nichols 29th June 1963 but later divorced. They had two children, Hew Evan Nichols Davies 5th September 1991 and Adelaide Violet Nichols Davies 30 January 1993.

In 1961, in the year that Michael Phillip Davies was born, on August 13th, East Germany began erection of what would become the Berlin Wall between East and West Berlin. In one day, they installed barbed wire entanglements and fences (called Barbed Wire Sunday in Germany). On August 17th, the first concrete elements and large blocks were put in place.

In 1970, on May 4th, four students at Kent State University in Ohio were shot and killed by National Guardsmen. The students were at a peaceful demonstration protesting the invasion of Cambodia by US forces. There had been precedent for the killing of American college students. The previous year, on May 15th, Alameda County Sheriffs used shotguns against U.C. Berkeley students at a protest for People's Park. One student died, one was blinded, 128 were injured.
