Introduction

Michael married Selma Munczek on 27 November 1959 in Melbourne, Australia. The wedding took place when the Olympics were held in Melbourne. Selma is an only child; her parents were Dora and Moses (known as "Munya") Munczek. The fled the Nazis in Vienna, Austria in 1939 and came to Melbourne, Australia. Michael and Selma had a baby girl, Rebecca, in 1958, but, tragically, she lived only one day. They had a daughter, Nicole, born on 2 June 1959 and a son, Raoul, born on 23 July 1961. Michael ended his marriage to Selma after 27 years which was very tough on the family. Michael passed away at the age of 88 on 2 February 2022.

Michael was born in Czechoslovakia. His mother was Rachel Stransky (nee Klein) who was born in Strasbourg, France. Michael's father was Hugo Stransky, born in Czechoslovakia. Hugo became an Orthodox Rabbi and earned a PhD. Michael has a younger sister, Judith. Rabbi Dr Hugo Stransky was appointed Chief Rabbi of Prague when World War II broke out and the family fled to England and spent the war years there. After the war, the family moved to Melbourne, Australia where Rabbi Stransky became the Rabbi of the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation for several years. He then moved to New Zealand and became a Rabbi in Washington Heights, New York, USA. Michael went to New Zealand but returned to Melbourne, Australia on his own.
