Michael married Selma Munczek on 27 November 1959 in Melbourne, Australia. The wedding took place when the Olympics were held in Melbourne. Selma is an only child; her parents were Dora and Moses (known as "Munya") Munczek. The fled the Nazis in Vienna, Austria in 1939 and came to Melbourne, Australia.
Michael and Selma had a baby girl, Rebecca, in 1958, but, tragically, she lived only one day. They had a daughter, Nicole, born on 2 June 1959 and a son, Raoul, born on 23 July 1961. Michael ended his marriage to Selma after 27 years which was very tough on the family.
Michael passed away at the age of 88 on 2 February 2022.
