Mildred was a 4-H leader and past member of the Extension units and Golden Belt Campers Association.

    MILDRED M. HOWELL MCPHERSON - Mildred M. Howell, 80, McPherson, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at Memorial Hospital, McPherson. Mrs. Howell was born Mildred M. Merkel on October 24, 1920, at Rozel and had lived in McPherson since 1999, moving from rural St. John. She was a homemaker, former cashier and payroll clerk for Montgomery Ward in Larned and former office manager for the Stafford County Extension Service, retiring in 1982 after 21 years service. She was a member of Eden Valley Church of Brethren of St. John, where she was a Sunday school teacher, clerk of the church board and member of the Ladies Aid Group. She attended the Church of Brethren in McPherson, was a 4-H leader and past member of the Extension units and Golden Belt Campers Association. Survivors include her husband, Weldon G. of the home; two sons, Nolan of Great Bend and Norman of Freemont, California; two daughters, Veneta Ediger of McPherson and Janice Wokaty of Jacksonville, Arkansas; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Eden Valley Church of the Brethren, rural St. John, the Reverends W. David Albright and Matthew Spurgin officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Larned Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home, 222 W. Euclid, McPherson 67460. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eden Valley Church of the Brethren in St. John, Church of the Brethren in McPherson or the American Heart Association. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday. - The Salina Journal (Salina, Kansas) Saturday, June 16, 2001 on page 4.
