    Minerva died and was buried in Beechworth cemetary - 16/05/1874 Taken from an email to Ineke on 1 Oct 2016 The records show one other with the family name THORNHILL- Minerva. Her age is given as 22 months. She was buried on 16/5/1874 in the Independent Area but the grave location was not recorded.

In 1872, in the year that Minerva Thornhill was born, on December 4th, the empty American ship Mary Celeste was found in the Atlantic Ocean. Still seaworthy, under partial sail, and with one lifeboat missing, what happened on her is still a mystery. Her cargo and provisions were intact and she was used as a cargo vessel for another 12 years but the people onboard were never seen again

In 1913, ratified in February the 16th Amendment, establishing a Federal income tax, became law. Previously, customs duties (tariffs) and excise taxes were the primary sources of federal revenue. With the passage of the 16th Amendment, incomes of couples exceeding $4,000, as well as those of single persons earning $3,000 or more, were subject to a 1% Federal tax (that would be about $98,000 and $74,000 now). Rates rose to 7% for incomes over half a million dollars. Less than 1% of the population was subject to income tax.
