Myrtle and her husband John had a young son, Rex, who was sent away to live in a boys' home in Newhaven, Phillip Island, when he was 12, for the crime of truanting. They never saw Rex alive again. Myrtle and John lived at 13 Smith Street, South Melbourne, at the time: John's occupation is given as "waterside worker" and the couple was very poor. Rex's brutal death at the hands of William Henry Baye, the superintendent and secretary of the boys' home, went unpunished. Rex had only been at the boys' home for two months before his death. Myrtle and John received a letter not long after their son had died, written by Rex, which arrived on what would have been Rex's birthday. The shock of these events killed Myrtle, who was 59.
