In 1906, in the year that Nancy Pershall was born, Finland became the first European country to give women the vote and to allow them to run for political office. (Women in Australia and New Zealand already had that right but couldn't run for office.) Although Finland belonged to the Russian Empire, there was great unrest and the Tsar wanted to broker a quick peace. As a part of the brokered peace, women got the vote.

In 1910, when she was only 4 years old, Thomas Edison introduced his kinetophone, which he hoped would make "talkies" a reality. But the sound wasn't synchronized to the pictures and only 45 Kinetophones were made.

First Responders: Policemen & Policewomen
From traffic control to crowd control, police men and women have always been on the front lines protecting their communities. These photos, dating from the 1800's through the early 1900's, are of those who have sworn to serve and protect. In some ways, a lot has changed but the duties of these men and women have remained the same. Wouldn't it be amazing if New York City's traffic today were like the 1911 photo below?
