His parents were born in Croatia near Opuzen, Neretva Valley. Mama’s family had flourishing farmland. She came to America in 1920 sponsored by her brother Ante, who settled on Staten Island. Mama worked as the Super of her building and other jobs to help her family.
  • Early Life & Education

Nicholas was accepted to Stuyvesant High School and graduated from Fordham College, obtaining Master’s degrees later from Fordham and NYU. As he stated, any school which required a special test for entry had to be a good school. When Nick wore his Arista Honor Society pin when called to the service in 1943, the recruitment lawyer gave him a 6 month reprieve to finish his first year of college. An accelerated student, he completed 2 years in that one year. The pivotal decision may have saved his life in WWII. Having a last name which began at the end of the alphabet also proved fortunate, as he was first sent to Italy. Under the GI bill he was able to obtain advanced degrees and a low interest mortgage after marrying Catherine Birch.

Add Memories, Stories & Photos about Nicholas

On Veterans Day I found a photo of dad’s 4th Platoon Co.D 18th Bn from Camp Wheeler GA. 1944. I watched a PBS show which detailed the route of the 4th Armored Div in Europe and dad’s 5th Division seemed similar, extending from the Siegfried Line in Germany to the Hurtgen Forest of Belgium and back to liberate the German camps in Spring 1945. What sacrifices were made for our freedoms and to continue the democratic way of life. After the 2024 election I am concerned with preserving same and promoting dad’s legacy in upholding the dignity and potential of each individual.
