Nicholas Stick 1875 - 1957

Nicholas Stick of Ivan Australia was born in 1875 in Cranbourne, VIC to Sarah Ann (Henderson) Stick Shead and John Stick. He had siblings Annie (Stick) Dorling, Elizabeth (Stick) Bould, James Stick, William Stick, Florence McKay (Stick), John Stick Jnr, and Sarah Ann Manks. He married Lily Constance (Large) Stick, and had children Dorothy Maud List ( Stick, Clyde Nicholas Stick, and Annie Cornwall McDonald ( Stick. Nicholas Stick died at age 82 years old in 1957 in Ivanhoe.

    The Age, Melbourne, September 21, 1957. STICK.- On September 19, at a private hospital, Ivanhoe. Nicholas, dearly loved husband of Lillian Stick, of 12 Francis Grove, Thornbury, beloved father of Annie ( Mrs. McDonald ), Dorothy ( Mrs. List ) and Clyde, father-in-law of Arch, Harry and Jeanie, and loving grandfather of Gregory, Norman and Janet, Geoffrey and Margaret, Anne and Bryce, aged 82 years.

In 1875, in the year that Nicholas Stick was born, on February 18th, the Mason County War, also called the Hoodoo War, began. In central Texas, a German-American mob broke into a jail with a battering ram and lynched two suspected cattle rustlers. Thus began a year of vigilante "justice."

In 1892, he was 17 years old when on October 12th, the "Pledge of Allegiance" was first recited in unison by students in U.S. public schools. Composed the previous August by Francis Bellamy, it was to be recited in 15 seconds and originally read: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." "Under God" was added in the 1950's.
