Ohanes Garabed Gulumian was the first-born son of Garabed and Aghavni (Movsesian) Gulumian. His brother Aram was born on November 28, 1893, followed by twins (1 girl and 1 boy), Nazeli and Vahram on March 26, 1898. Another sister, Anush, was born on May 1, 1901, followed by his youngest brother, Hrant on March 6, 1906. Ohanes emigrated from Armenia in the Ottoman Empire and came to the United States late in 1909. An uncle helped him get a job at the Victoria Shoe Factory in East Boston. He also worked privately as a tailor making clothing for Patrick Joseph "PJ" Kennedy. He dedicated his adult life to working hard and saving money to help bring his other family members to America. On July 16, 1913, Ohanes Garabed Gulumian officially filed his petition in Boston to become a naturalized U.S. citizen. On September 11, 1916, his dream came true when he was officially sworn in as a citizen.
