He had siblings Mary Ethel Hotton, William Cecil Hotton, Frederick George Hotton, Letty Isabel Hotton, Alexander Leslie Hotton, Peter Stanford Hotton, David Leonard Hotton, and James Ogilvie Hotton. He married Elizabeth Osullivan Hotton, and had children David Henry Hotton, Peter James Hotton, Mary Isabella Hotton, Oswald George Hotton, and Evelyn Winifred Hotton. Oswald Hotton died at age 54 years old on September 29, 1939 in Fitzroy.

In 1884, in the year that Oswald Peter Hotton was born, on August 5th, the cornerstone for the base of the Statue of Liberty - a gift from the people of France - was laid. 120,000 people - most donations were $1 - donated to the completion of the base.
