William Cecil Hotton of QLD Australia was born in 1880 in Carlton, City of Melbourne County, VIC to Peter Hotton and Mary Webster Hotton. He had siblings Mary Ethel Hotton, Frederick George Hotton, Letty Isabel Hotton, Alexander Leslie Hotton, Peter Stanford Hotton, Oswald Peter Hotton, David Leonard Hotton, and James Ogilvie Hotton. William Hotton married Lily Adelaide Lorraine Mappin in 1916, and died at age 83 years old on July 19, 1964 in QLD.

In 1880, in the year that William Cecil Hotton was born, in October, the "Blizzard of 1880" began in North America - considered the most severe winter ever known in the US. Many areas were snowbound throughout the whole winter, which was made famous in Laura Ingalls Wilder's book The Long Winter.

In 1911, by the time he was 31 years old, the United States Supreme Court broke up Standard Oil in May. John D. Rockefeller established Standard Oil in 1870 and it was the largest oil refinery at the time. The Supreme Court found that Standard Oil of New Jersey (one of the many iterations of Standard Oil) was guilty of "monopolizing the petroleum industry through a series of abusive and anticompetitive actions". The Court broke up the several entities that comprised Standard Oil and they eventually became competing firms.
