Introduction

Otto Gainey's father was George Gainey, born in Florida in 1852, and his mother was Mary Gainey, born in 1868 also in Florida. Otto had siblings Jestus, Adelaide, Mitchell, Catherine, Madgie, Sam, Prince (1897 -1992), Wiley, Mamie, Celestial, Prince(1902 - 1992), Dan, Mitchell, and Abraham. Most records say that Otto was born in 1895, his headstone says that he was born in 1893. The day and month are the same in both. Otto married Emma Woods, born 1892, and they had child Sylvesta Cooks, born in 1911. He also married Stella Gainey, born 1910. When Otto was 47, he was living in Alachua, Florida on a farm and working as a farmer. He had completed the 6th grade. Also in the household were Rena Woods, Otto's mother-in-law, Otto's wife Emma, and their child Sylvesta Cooks, 29. Sylvesta was a helper on the farm. Otto was a veteran of World War II.
