Patrick Egan of Napoleons, Golden Plains Shire County, VIC Australia was born in October 1856 in Buninyong to John Egan and Mary "Maria" Egan Egan. He had siblings James Egan and John Thomas Egan. He married Julia Hanrahan Egan in 1882, and had children John Joseph Egan, Edmond Patrick Egan, and Patrick "Patsy" Egan. Patrick Egan died at age 63 years old on September 22, 1920 in Napoleons.

In 1856, in the year that Patrick Egan was born, on January 26th the Battle of Seattle occurred. Marines from the ship the USS Decatur, stationed in Elliott Bay, along with about 50 Seattle settlers, fought Native Americans in the area. Territorial Governor Isaac Stevens had declared a "war of extermination" on Native communities 5 days before.

In 1865, Patrick was merely 9 years old when on April 14th, President Abraham Lincoln was shot while attending a comedy at Ford's Theatre - Our American Cousin - in Washington, D.C. Actor and Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth shot him 4 days after Lee had surrendered. The President died the next day. At almost the same time that Lincoln was shot, US Secretary of State William H. Seward and his family were attacked at home by another conspirator and Confederate sympathizer.
