He had siblings Alfred Carew (1889-1956), Mary Grace Carey (1894-1974), Samuel Joseph Carew (1898-1985), and Michael Francis Carew (1901-1979). Paul was born on April 7, 1907 in Witless Bay, Newfoundland and grew up there. He then immigrated to the states arriving in New York, NY on April 3, 1930. He then resided in Dorchester, Massachusetts and Boston, MA. He became a naturalized citizen on November 21, 1939 in New York. He married Mary Bridget Norris (1908-2003) and they had a daughter named Mary Therese Carew (1949-). They resided in Boston, MA where he worked as a fisherman. Paul Carew passed away on June 6, 1962 in Massachusetts.

Rockefeller established Standard Oil in 1870 and it was the largest oil refinery at the time. The Supreme Court found that Standard Oil of New Jersey (one of the many iterations of Standard Oil) was guilty of "monopolizing the petroleum industry through a series of abusive and anticompetitive actions". The Court broke up the several entities that comprised Standard Oil and they eventually became competing firms.
