  • Introduction

Paul Horst Kushel was born on November 8, 1923 in Danzig, Germany to parents Rudolf Herms (1906–1980) and Gertrude M Kuschel (1905–1972). He had one sister, Louise C Califano (1929-2007). He grew up in Germany and immigrated to the United States in April of 1940 arriving in New York, New York, New York, USA. Paul Kushel enlisted in the US Army on October 31, 1942, in New York City. He was initially classified as a Private in the Selective Service system, which suggests that he was drafted rather than enlisting voluntarily. Upon enlistment, he was assigned to the Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, indicating that he would eventually be trained and commissioned as a warrant officer. However, his initial rank was still Private, Selectees (enlisted men), suggesting that he had yet to complete his training. He officially began his service on November 14, 1942, just two weeks after enlisting. After serving for more than three years, he was discharged on December 31, 1945, having fulfilled his obligation to the military. It is unclear whether he continued his military career in any capacity after his discharge. After his discharge he lived in New York City until the 1970's when he moved to Denver, Colorado and then later went on to live in Lakewood, Colorado, USA. On February 7, 1945 he married Gloria Elizabeth Keshishian Kushel (1926–2009) and they had a child together, Kenneth Matthew Kushel (1946–2003).
