My first job
I was her neighbor when in 4th grade & often played on her property behind her house. We began to chat & became friends. She was a writer of sorts & submitted pieces for a children’s magazine. She offered me my first job — drawing pictures around crossword puzzles she laid out for the magazine. The words were based on a topic, such as “dogs” & I would draw a dog’s head behind the crossword blocks, for $1 @. She was very smart & kind & would invite me in for tea. Obviously we had a large age difference! But we got along. My family eventually moved away & some time after I wrote her once. Her son replied with a kind note that she was happy I wrote & she was in the hospital. Sixty years later now, I remembered her & was happy to find she lived so long.
