  • Introduction

    Ruby Pauline Woodard was born September 30th 1919 to Sam and Lillie(O'dell) Woodard. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Vanita, Oklahoma. Where she graduated at the age of 15. She Married Jack Henry at age of 16. She and Jack began working for the Griffin Family of Quapaw Oklahoma, but was dismissed, and then began working for The Whitebird family also of Quapaw Oklahoma. Pauline learned to do native american beadwork from her father, and was very involved in stomp dances and powwow dances. She and the rest of her siblings would all pile into their dads' old Model A truck and head out for the dances. Sometimes they would dance by the car headlights. She became a renound native american artisan. Pauline would complete a buckskin dress(without beadwork) in 24 hours. She had made over 1000 buckskin dresses. She made a brand new buckskin for her daughter Cynthia D Whitebird every year. People came to learn to make moccasins, leggings, dance regalia, fans, ribbon dresses and skirts for stompdance. She made dolls sets with full garb, pillow shams with matching quilts, shawls, cradleboards, buckskin clothing for the Mountain Man Rondevou community, she was always willing to help teach her craft. She also was a midwife at age 13, appointed by the county Doctor. She later became a LPN, and worked at Bradshaw hospital , Baxter Memorial, The old St. JOHNS in Joplin, MO. She was an accomplished Bowling Champion, bowling was a passion of hers. She could bowl a perfect game. She was a member of the "700 club" at the Miami Bowling Alley, in Miami, Oklahoma. Her Team "Whitebird Acre" won the spot to represent USA in the Olympics in Cuba. Being a great cook, She began cooking Quapaw tribal dishes, and became a feast cook for the tribal dinners. She was most famous for her Chicken and dumplings, wich were always requested from her to be added to the menu at all the tribal dinners. She conducted a huge feast every year on the 4th of July, and held it at her camp located at the Quapaw Tribal Ceremonial Grounds, during the annual Quapaw Tribal Powwow. The feast was in honor of "The Ones That Have GoneOn" . Pauline also held lavish holiday feasts for family and friends.
