He had a brother Jack R Evans. He married Barbara (Taylor) Evans in Jeannette, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and had a child Gary Russell Evans. Penry Evans died at age 53 years old in September 1978, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Arlington County, VA.

Penry was born into a Baptist family, but after marriage to Barbara Eddy Taylor, they both became members of the Mt. Vernon Unitarian Church.
