At the time of the World War II draft, he was only 17 years old, and registered for the military draft on May 19, 1945, in Iowa, USA. Shortly after his 18th birthday, on July 6, 1945, Peter enlisted in the military at Fort Snelling in Minnesota. He joined with no branch assignment as a Private Selectee (Enlisted Men).
