He was born on May 22, 1927 in Bigelow, Nobles County, Minnesota and had an older sister Gertrude as well as a younger brother John B. Runia. They grew up living in Wilson, Osceola, Iowa, USA. At the time of the World War II draft, he was only 17 years old, and registered for the military draft on May 19, 1945, in Iowa, USA. Shortly after his 18th birthday, on July 6, 1945, Peter enlisted in the military at Fort Snelling in Minnesota. He joined with no branch assignment as a Private Selectee (Enlisted Men).

"Lucky Lindy" took off from Long Island in New York and flew to Paris, covering  3,600 statute miles and flying for 33 1⁄2-hours. His plane "The Spirit of St. Louis" was a fabric-covered, single-seat, single-engine "Ryan NYP" high-wing monoplane designed by both Lindbergh and the manufacturer's chief engineer.
