Peter P Runia was born on January 27, 1920 in Sibley, Osceola County, Iowa, United States of America to parents Peter Cornelis Runia (1871-1936) and Cornelia "Kate" de Jong (1879-1955). He grew up in Wilson, Osceola, Iowa, USA with siblings Cornelius "Case" Runia (1899-1997), Elizabeth Runia (1914-), and John Bernard Runia (1929-1997). At the time of the WWII draft, he was 21 years old and registered for the military draft on July 1, 1941, in Iowa, USA. Then on April 12, 1944, Peter enlisted in the military at Camp Dodge Herrold in Iowa. He joined with no branch assignment as a Private Selectee (Enlisted Men). Peter was married to Irene Florence Ricklefs (1920-2008). Together the couple had a son.

He was white of Dutch heritage as both of his parents were born in the Netherlands and immigrated to the United States. His father Peter was born in Berlikum, Menaldumadeel, Netherlands on June 8, 1871 and he immigrated to the states in the 1890's. His mother Cornelia was born in Capelle, Waalwijk, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands on January 10, 1879 and came the the states in the 1890's as well. Peter's parents were married on March 18, 1897 in Jasper County, Iowa, USA.

He later moved to Orange City, Sioux, Iowa, USA and then on to Bettendorf, Scott, Iowa, USA in the late 1940's. In the 1980's he moved back to his hometown of Sibley, Osceola, Iowa and passed away there in 2006.
