Peter Edward Layeski 1915 - 1995

Peter Edward Layeski was born on April 30, 1915 in Sayreville, Middlesex County, New Jersey United States to Paul Layeski and Eleanor (Tenlik) Layeski, and had siblings John William Layeski, Josephine (Layeski) Swinski, Hattie (Layeski) Hranowski, Irene (Layeski) Sielewicki, and Jennie Charlotte Zych. He married Jane Theresa Layeski on September 13, 1941 in South River, Middlesex County, NJ, and they were married until Peter's death on January 5, 1995 at St. Peter's Medical Center 254 Easton Ave., in New Brunswick. He had children Richard Peter Layeski, Charlotte Jean Bird, Phyllis Ann Cudworth, and Marlene Diane Anderson. Peter Layeski was buried on January 9, 1995 in East Brunswick.

In 1915, in the year that Peter Edward Layeski was born, in April, the Ottoman Empire rounded up, arrested, and deported 235 to 270 Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Turkey. As their actions continued through the next several years, an estimated 600,000 to 1 million Armenians were killed by Turkish soldiers.

In 1945, at the age of 30 years old, Peter was alive when on June 22nd, the Battle of Okinawa ended. A joint Army and Marine campaign, supported by the Navy, the Battle of Okinawa went on for 82 days. The last Japanese resistance on Okinawa was defeated. 4,907 Navy, 4,675 Army, and 2,938 Marine Corps personnel were killed in the battle on the US side. It is estimated that 110,071 on the Japanese side were killed - the estimate includes Okinawan citizens who were pressed into service and includes children. With the win of Okinawa, the United States gained an important base of operations in the Pacific.
