Peter Schlimgen was born in 1838 to Johann Schlimgen and Christina (Schuetz ) Schlimgen, and had siblings Engelbert Schlimgen, Gertaud Schlimgen, Mathias Schlimgen, Sybilla Schlimgen, and Elisabeth Schlimgen. Peter Schlimgen died at age 1 year old in 1839.

In 1838, in the year that Peter Schlimgen was born, on May 26th, the Native American Cherokee Nation was forced to march the Trail of Tears - relocating them to west of the Mississippi. When gold was discovered in Georgia in 1828, settlers wanted the Cherokee land. 16,543 natives were forced to march - it is estimated that 2,000 to 6,000 died along the way.

In 1839, in the year of Peter Schlimgen's passing, in The Boston Morning Post, on March 23rd, the first recorded use of the word "OK" appeared. A columnist in the paper said this: "The "Chairman of the Committee on Charity Lecture Bells, is one of the deputation, and perhaps if he should return to Boston, via Providence, he of the Journal, and his train-band, would have his 'contribution box,' et ceteras, o.k.—all correct—and cause the corks to fly, like sparks, upward." While this is the first known time that OK appeared in print, where the word came from is still disputed.
