Life of Phebe Welch
PHEBE WELCH 1835 – 1905
Phebe (Phoebe) born 27th July 1835, to John & Elizabeth (Eliza) Welch (Welsh), nee Demock.
(Dimmock). Phebe, baptised at George St. Baptist Church, Ryde. England
John was a tailor, with 4 children.
Eliza (Elizabeth) Welch, died 1853.
At age 19, on 28th December 1855, Phebe, sailed from Southampton on S.S. “Persia” arriving Melbourne, 11th April 1856.
Upon arrival, Phebe was allocated to Mrs Fletcher at 203 Lonsdale St. Melbourne Central.
This was the residence of Robert S.H. Moody, a carpenter, who worked for David Mitchell.
In 1857, Phebe, worked for Mrs. Teale at the same address.
John Willis, a labourer, arrived from London on ss Northumberland on 1st November 1852.

John Willis married Phoebe Amelia Welch in 1857 (Certificate No. 2148/1857)
John Willis, unfortunately died by “suffocation, caused by accident”. Inquest 5th April 1862.
His Death Victoria 4598/1862
1865, Phoebe’s father, John Welch, drowned when ss “Agnes” was wrecked, en route to Melbourne, at Cape Jaffa S.A.
On 8th July 1868, Phebe married, Robert McPherson (Cert. No 3214/1868) at The Manse, South Yarra, by noted Presbyterian Minister, George Mackie a very good friend to Robert.
Robert & Phoebe were required to wait 7 years for a legal wedding

Robert, born 1826 in Sutherlandshire Scotland, parents, Kennett, a farmer & Christina?
I was unable to locate Robert’s family via Scotland BDM & other research resources.
Robert, a bachelor, aged 42 years, worked for David Mitchell as a plasterer.
Prior to their marriage, Robert & Phoebe, resided in Balmoral St. Prahran. Phebe most probably a housemaid for Robert, referral via Moody or Mackie.
Although the registered birth certificates record John Willis as the father of the following children, John was pronounced deceased prior to the inquest of 5th April 1862.Therefore, Robert was the biological father, as birth certificates after there wedding confirm.

Many of the descendants of the above children, inherited their Christian names from their parents and grandparents, McPherson & Welch

On the 17th April, 1893 at No. 27 Macquarie-street, Prahran, Donald, the fifth son of George and Annie Scottish, and grandson of the late Robert McPherson, plasterer, South Yarra, aged 8 weeks.

It appears Phoebe Welch, after marrying Charles White had 21 senior years with many grandchildren & great grandchildren throughout Australia.
