I rmember very little about Pierce Patrick, my maternal grandfather. Bt the time I was eight years of age he was a very sick and elderly man living with his wife Lucy at Dandenong in Victoria. In the days of no transport to rural areas and not many privately owned vehicles Mum, Wendy, did not see her parents often. Grandfather Pierce died just after my ninth birthday. In those days children were not taken to funerals...at least I was not. WHat I remember best about Grandfather Hynes was that he had a big long haired balck dog that he loved very much. It would be politically incorrect today but Grandfather called his beloved dog "N*****". Once Mum was visiting Dandenong when I was about 4. We'd come back from Nauru for a while. Grandfather wanted one of his sons to go fishing with him but none of them would go. I remember feeling very sorry for him, he looked sad, so I said I'd go. Mum wasn't too happy letting me in the care of a very sick old man but I crid so much she had to give in. Grandfather and I walked hand in hand down the dirt road to the creek...I was 4 and telling him to watch the potholes and puddles! We caught three Eels, Grandfather showed me how to thread the hooks. That evening we had Eels for dinner. I didn't like them very much but I ate them to please Grandfather.
