  • Introduction

    Ray married a 17 year old girl, June Wooden. They had one daughter, Frederica. Two weeks after her birth, Ray went in to have a small growth removed from his neck. He died from a reaction to the anesthesia. June Wooden Dudley remarried to Ames Bliss and had a son, Gilbert. They divorced and June moved back to Princeton, NJ to raise her child with her family. Ames remarried and had a daughter. Two weeks after her birth, Ames was celebrating a promotion and choked to death on his own vomit. Many years later, Ray's niece, Lucinda met Gilbert and began a long distance relationship that culminated in their marriage when she was 17.

In 1919, in the year that Ray Lofton Dudley Jr was born, in the summer and early autumn, race riots erupted in 26 U.S. cities, resulting in hundreds of deaths and even more people being badly hurt. In most cases, African-Americans were the victims. It was called the "Red Summer". Men who were returning from World War I needed jobs and there was competition for those jobs among the races. Tension was heightened by the use by many companies of blacks as strikebreakers.

In 1920, Ray was only 1 year old when the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote, passed both Houses of Congress and was sent to the States to ratify. In August, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the Amendment and it became law eight days later. Mississippi ratified it in 1984.
