  • Ethnicity & Family History

William was Caucasian. His ancestors on his father's side came from England and on his mother's side came from Germany. None of his ancestors were recent immigrants and considered themselves American and not English or German.
  • Nationality & Locations

William was born, raised, lived his life and died in Houston, Texas. He and his wife, Nell Sweeney Dudley did live in Austin, TX while he attended graduate school from 1949 to 1951 and then moved to Lake Jackson, TX from 1951 to 1954 when he went to work for Dow Chemical. However most of their lives were lived in or near the same zip code. William and his wife would have told you they were well traveled as they did take some trips to Europe together and he traveled to Japan. These were business trips and they did very little else while away from home other than meeting with business contacts. The most traveling William did was to Eagle Pass, TX to go hunting with customers and stay at Ft. Clark. He also enjoyed going across the border to Piedras Negras, Mexico where a friend of his owned a restaurant.
  • Early Life & Education

William was publicly and privately educated at Lamar High School and Choate. He attended and graduated Rice Institute, now Rice University. Upon completion of his BA, William attended the University of Texas, where he received his master's in chemical engineering.
  • Religious Beliefs

William faithfully attended services at St John the Divine (Episcopal). He also participated in weekly prayer sessions with selected vice presidents of Gulf Publishing Company.
  • Military Service

William did serve briefly. His two older brothers had died during their military service during WWII, so he was a sole surviving son. When his physical showed a chest X-ray with tuberculosis, the military promoted him (to give him a higher monthly salary) and gave him an honorable discharge to go home to die with his family. Happily for William, they got their X-rays mixed up. William didn't have tuberculosis. He did receive a paycheck from the military for the rest of his life.
  • Professional Career

William chose chemical engineering as his profession. He worked for Dow Chemical Company in Lake Jackson, TX until his father requested his help with the family business. With great regret, William moved his family to Houston, TX and began working for his father, who was having serious health problems. In 1957, William's father passed away and the leadership of the companies he founded fell to William. From 1957 until his death in 1989, William provided that leadership, taking Gulf Publishing Company from a local enterprise to a world wide corporation. He spent his final years protecting his staff from losing their jobs during a recession and training his nephew, Ray Dudley Cashman to take over.
  • Personal Life & Family

William loved to build tiny things. He met and made friends with one of the inventors of the auto pilot and the two made airplane parts for fun. He always had a shop at home with a metal lathe and a HAM radio set. William enjoyed flying and was fortunate to be able to have an airplane paid for by the company to take clients out in. He often combined his love of flying with a love of hunting. Clients were often treated to a private airplane trip to west Texas to hunt deer or doves. William also loved to read and could be found almost every evening reading Churchill's works and other weighty tomes.
