Raymond Edward Laux was born on July 22, 1924 in Albany, Linn, Oregon, USA to parents Anthony Laux (1886-1972) and Irma Blanche Smith (1903-1988). At the time of his draft registration on December 12, 1942, he was 18 years old and resided in Corvallis, Benton, Oregon. He was a student at that time. He eventually enlisted in the US Army on July 14, 1943, in Portland, Oregon, as a Private in the Selectees (enlisted men) category. Raymond was discharged from the military on March 26, 1946, after serving for almost three years. Later that year, after competing his time in the military, Ray married Arleigh Kay Dullum (1927–2012) on October 1, 1946 in Corvallis, Benton, Oregon, USA. The couple divorced two years later on January 27, 1948 in Benton, Oregon, USA. He then married again to Lecrissa Rae Gwillim (1931–1997) on August 9, 1951 in Corvallis. The couple had four children together and then later divorced on January 9, 1973. Ray married one more time on April 6, 1981 in Marion, Oregon, USA to Shirley Colvinhecht.
