Raymond Isidore Laux was born on March 2, 1913 in Brown County, Minnesota, USA to parents John Laux (1868-1951) and Catherine "Katie" Sieg (1874-1914). He registered for the draft on October 16, 1940, in Comfrey, Brown, Minnesota. At the time, he was 27 years old, self-employed, and residing in Comfrey. Raymond then enlisted in the United States Army on January 6, 1941, in New Ulm, Minnesota. He was assigned to the Coast Artillery Corps or Army Mine Planter Service as a Private in the National Guard (officers, Warrant Officers, and enlisted men), with military serial number 20749431. On January 18, 1942 he married Marcella Anna Suess (1918–2007) in Sleepy Eye, Brown, Minnesota, USA. The couple had three children together: David Allen Laux (1942-1948), Gloria Jean Laux (1943-1948), and Raymond John Laux (1944-1948).
