Rebecca (Tufts) Prescott was born on August 31, 1797 in Lexington, Massachusetts United States to George Tufts and Rebecca (Frost), and had siblings William Tufts, Joshua F Tufts, and Joseph Tufts. Rebecca Prescott married Daniel Prescott on November 2, 1814 in Boston, Suffolk County, and died at age 29 years old on September 13, 1826 in Lexington.

In 1800, Rebecca was merely 3 years old when on August 30th, educated blacksmith Gabriel Prosser organized a slave revolt. He wanted to capture Richmond and kill all whites - excluding Methodists, Quakers, Frenchmen, and the poor - and become king of a new black nation. The revolt failed, he was captured and hung. Slave laws were tightened in Virginia.

In 1803, at the age of merely 6 years old, Rebecca was alive when the first public library in the United States - free to everyone - opened in Salisbury, Connecticut. Damage to books was most often caused by "greasing" - candle wax dripping onto the books. Candles were the only source of light in the evenings.
