Richard Edward Leishman of Terang, VIC Australia was born in 1864 in Port Fairy, Moyne Shire County to Richard Thomas Leishman and Jane Spink Leishman. He had siblings Arthur Henry Leishman, Thomas John Leishman, and John Spink Leishman. He married Margaret Wickham in 1897, and had a child Andrew Edward Leishman. Richard Leishman died at age 80 years old on April 26, 1945 in Terang.

In 1864, in the year that Richard Edward Leishman was born, on February 25th, the first prisoners arrived at Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Andersonville became notorious for the conditions that Union prisoners endured. 500 prisoners had left from Richmond, Virginia the week before - eventually 13,000 prisoners would die at the prison.
