Richard Oliver Harris passed away in 1959 in Mont, Australia at 90 years old. He was born in 1869. He was born to Charles Harris and Matilda Harris.

In 1869, in the year that Richard Oliver Harris was born, on May 10th, North America's first transcontinental railroad was completed at Promontory Summit, Utah Territory, by driving a "golden spike" or the "last spike" of the line. The spike was driven by Leland Stanford and is now displayed at Stanford University.

In 1873, he was merely 4 years old when on March 4th, Ulysses S. Grant was inaugurated for a second time as President of the United States. Grant ran against Horace Greeley - "go West, young man" - and won 55.6% of the popular vote versus Greeley's 43.8%.

In 1883, Richard was just 14 years old when on June 16th, children at a children's variety show in Victoria Hall began rushing the stage area and lobby for promised prizes. In the stampede, 183 children of the 1100 present - most of them 3 to 4 years old - were crushed and asphyxiated.

In 1929, he was 60 years old when American Samoa officially became a U.S. territory. Although a part of the United States since 1900, the Ratification Act of 1929 vested "all civil, judicial, and military powers in the President of the United States of America".

In 1959, in the year of Richard Oliver Harris's passing, on August 8th, Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States. The US flag was changed to show 50 stars.
