He married Elizabeth Penberthy Climas, and had children William Hedley Climas, Thomas Henry Climas, and Margaret Mabel Climas. Richard Climas died at age 51 years old on June 10, 1917 in Long Gully.

In 1865, in the year that Richard Thomas Climas was born, on December 24th, 8 months after the end of the Civil War, the Ku Klux Klan was formed in Pulaski, Tennessee by Jonathan Shank and Barry Ownby. They wanted to fight Reconstruction after the Civil War and to intimidate what were called "carpetbaggers" and "scalawags" - northern and southern whites who supported reconstruction. They also wanted to repress the newly freed slaves.
