Robert Allen Zimmerman, who later changed his name to "Bob Dylan" was born on May 24, 1941.

Bob Dylan is a successful poet and painter, but is most known for his contributions as a singer and songwriter over the last five decades. Bob quickly rose to fame during the 1960's as his music often incorporated a variety of political, literary, and philosophical influences, making him a perfect spokesman for the youth of the 60's.

Born Robert Allen Zimmerman, Bob Dylan is a popular & influential singer-songwriter and musician. Bob was born in Duluth, Minnesota on May 24, 1941. After leaving the University of Minnesota his freshman year, he relocated to New York. He has been an active artist since 1961.

In 1962, he chose to officially change his surname to Dylan as a nod to the inspiration of Dylan Thomas. Over the years, Dylan has received a myriad of awards (Grammy, Golden Globe, Academy Awards, induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame). In 2008, he received a special citation from the Pulitzer Prize jury for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power.” Most recently in 2012, President Barack Obama awarded Bob Dylan the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This is the highest civilian award bestowed in the United States.

His parents were Abram Zimmerman and Beatrice Stone. His paternal grandparents, Zigman and Anna Zimmerman, emigrated from Odessa in the Russian Empire (now Ukraine) to the United States following the anti-Semitic pogroms of 1905. His maternal grandparents, Benjamin and Lybba Edelstein, were Lithuanian Jews who arrived in the United States in 1902. His paternal grandmother's maiden name was Kyrgyz and her family originated from Kars, Turkey.
