  • Introduction

    The Gippsland Times. Victoria. 11th November 1929 - Sudden Death. Another sudden death occurred here last week. Mr. R. Barr had been unwell for a short time and his condition became so serious that he was taken to Dr. Armstrong's where he became rapidly worse. A specialist was called in from the City with Dr. MacDonald of Sale, but their efforts were of no avail. He passed away on Monday last. The late Mr. Barr was a native of the Western District, near Winchelsea, and came with his brother to Traralgon about 30 years ago. He was the eldest of a family of nine. He leaves a widow and family of three sons and two daughters.

    The Argus, Melbourne. 6th November 1929. BARR. - On the 5th November, at Stretton Park private hospital, Maffra, Robert, the loving husband of Margaret Barr, Newry, and eldest son of the late William and Mary Barr, late of Murroon, loving father of May ( Mrs. Mason ), Margaret, William, Macmillan, and Jack. Aged 60 years.

In 1877, by the time he was just 8 years old, on March 2nd, the U.S. presidential election of 1876 was ended with the selection of Rutherford B. Hayes as the winner. Samuel J. Tilden had won the popular vote in November 1876 but 20 votes in the electoral college were in dispute. An informal agreement was made in which Hayes agreed to remove federal troops from South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana, ending Reconstruction in the South. So, on March 4th, Rutherford B. Hayes became the 19th President of the United States.
