  • Military Service

On October 16th 1940 Robert registered for the World War 2 draft and listed his employer as William King Cain, next of kin as Lula Grant, and said that he lived in Dallas Texas at the time. Robert served in the Navy during World War 2 on the USS Saturn (AK49). The freighter ship has an interesting history: originally built in 1939 by Germany it was later acquired by the US Navy on April 20th 1942 and renamed Saturn. There is a muster roll showing that Robert served onboard the Saturn during November 1943. During this time the ship was typically supplying East coast ports in Norfolk and Baltimore and bases in the Caribbean such as Guantanamo and Trinidad. Except during October-November in 1942 when it made one trip to England. It's very possible Robert was onboard during this trip.
