Robert Bletchman used to live on Oxford street in Manchester CT, very close to my former residence on Ashland st. As he once said to someone, "By a remarkable coincidence there's another MUFON member in this neighborhood and we both got into UFOs independently of one another." After initially speaking with Robert on the phone, I met him three times--once during a September 1981 MUFON meeting at his house, another time at his house the following year and a third time at the Mary Cheney library in Manchester. Robert and I agreed UFOs are real and ET, and the government is concealing proof of their reality. We disagreed, however, on whether it was possible to force the government to disclose. I maintained disclosure was currently impossible, as it would be suicide for present government. Robert was optimistic it could be done, and strove for many years to do it. He died in 2008 without realizing his dream.

That's so cool Robert was a spokesman for MUFON! I had to look him up and found he was quoted as saying in a 1994 Washington Post article about aliens: "It is not the collective meanderings of a population gone bonkers. It's based on empirical stuff. This is what very sober persons have witnessed."

I liked some of Robert's views, like his dismissal of "New Age cockamamie" in the UFO field. I also came to see considerable merit in his theory on crash dummies (the government's explanation for Roswell bodies). In Robert's view, this ridiculous explanation is not meant to be taken seriously. By indirectly helping the case for ET, it is preparation for disclosure. Robert's theory was picked up by the media but didn't win general acceptance. My own views are in the book THE ALIEN GRAND DESIGN.

You wrote a book on the subject! Added to my read list. Thanks Tim!!

Thanks but bear in mind, THE ALIEN GRAND DESIGN is the most controversial work on the subject you're ever likely to see. It's just a POD work because NO standard trade publisher would dare touch it….

Robert was very bright but not very intellectual. In my opinion, interpreting the phenomenon correctly requires in-depth and wide ranging knowledge in a number of fields, such as astronomy and human history. He didn't seem interested in that, and preferred to ask personal questions….

After Robert died I contacted Stan Friedman, to ask if he had heard of his death. "Yes" Stan replied. He mentioned something about smoking… A few years ago, I contacted the CT State director, Panicello, and discovered he had never even heard of Bletchman!

1932 - 2008 World Events

Refresh this page to see various historical events that occurred during Robert's lifetime.

In 1932, in the year that Robert H Bletchman was born, five years to the day after Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic, Amelia Earhart flew solo from Newfoundland to Ireland, the first woman to cross the Atlantic solo and the first to replicate Lindbergh's feat. She flew over 2,000 miles in just under 15 hours.

In 1946, Robert was merely 14 years old when pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock's book "The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care" was published. It sold half a million copies in the first six months. Aside from the Bible, it became the best selling book of the 20th century. A generation of Baby Boomers were raised by the advice of Dr. Spock.

In 1979, he was 47 years old when on March 28th, a partial nuclear meltdown occurred at the power plant at Three Mile Island Pennsylvania. Radiation leaked into the environment, resulting in a rating of 5 on a scale of 7 ("Accident With Wider Consequences") . It ended up costing $1 billion to clean up the site.

In 1988, Robert was 56 years old when on December 21st, Pan Am Flight 103 exploded over Lockerbie Scotland. The explosion killed all 259 people on board and another 11 on the ground. The flight had left Heathrow Airport in London less than an hour before, on its way to New York. After an exhaustive (and long) investigation it came to be believed that two individuals from Libya had planted the bomb.

In 1995, at the age of 63 years old, Robert was alive when on October 16th, the Million Man March took place on the National Mall in Washington DC. The March was organized to address "the ills of black communities and call for unity and revitalization of African American communities". An estimated 850,000 people attended.
