Robert James Olsian was born on November 20, 1946 in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey United States to Gabriel John Olsian and Anna Grace Olsian, and had a sister Mary Lee Parr. He married Marlene Diane Anderson in 1972 in East Brunswick, Middlesex County and they later divorced in 1978 in New Brunswick. He would also marry Patricia Ann Olsian in 1981 in East Brunswick, Middlesex County, and they were married until Robert's death on October 24, 2002 in Seaside Heights, Ocean County.

In 1946, in the year that Robert James Olsian was born, pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock's book "The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care" was published. It sold half a million copies in the first six months. Aside from the Bible, it became the best selling book of the 20th century. A generation of Baby Boomers were raised by the advice of Dr. Spock.

In 1957, at the age of only 11 years old, Robert was alive when on September 24th, the "Little Rock Nine" (nine African-American students) entered Little Rock High School. Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus had previously prevented the students from entering the school at the beginning of the term with the Arkansas National Guard - they blocked the door. President Eisenhower ordered federal troops - the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army - to guard the students and allow them entry.
