    Robert's father was Robert L. Myers Jr. (1897 - 1990) and his mother was Evelyn Mary (Mentzer) Myers (1903 - 1980) . He had brothers Edward Howard Myers (1930 - 1988) and Phillip N Myers and sister Virigina E Myers.. In the 1950 federal census, Robert III was living at home with parents Robert Jr and Evelyn. In the household in Camp Hill, PA were Robert (21), Edward (20), Phillip (15), and Virginia (13). Father Robert was an attorney at law in the "law industry". Everyone in the household had been born in Pennsylvania. Robert followed his father, becoming an attorney at law. He was a veteran of World War Two. He then married Helen Sherred Johnson on Saturday June 21, 1958 at St John's Episcopal Church.

Myers, who was presented to the court for admission by his father, Robert L. Myers Jr., also a member of the Bar, is a graduate of Mercersburg Academy, William and Mary College in 1951 and Dickinson School of Law in 1953. During World War II he served with B Troop, 3rd Cavalry. He is a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity at William and Mary, Corpus Juris at Dickinson School of Law and was a member of the business staff of the Dickinson Law Review. This gives the Cumberland County Bar two father-son combinations. John Myers, a brother of Robert L. Myers Jr., and his son, Thomas, practice before the Cumberland Bar.
