    R. L. Gray Sr. Dies; Funeral Set Thursday Robert Lester Gray Sr., 72, of Route 5, Summit Avenue Extension, died yesterday morning at Veterans Hospital in Durham where he had been a patient for two weeks. He was a native of Pittsylvania County, Va., and had lived in Greensboro 30 years. He was a retired carpenter and a Navy veteran of World War I. Surviving are his wife, the former Ryntha Adams; one son Robert L. Gray Jr.; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Merricks of Danville, Va., Mrs. Ruby Blankenship of Evanston, Va., Mrs. Myrtle Preston of Saucer Mass., and Mrs. Mabel Matley of Dry, Fork, Va.; five brothers, John Gray of Danville, Henry Gray of Bachelors Hall, Va., Tom Gray of Missouri, Claude Gray of Baltimore and Jesse Gray of Ontario, Canada; and one grandchild. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lambeth-Troxler Chapel by the Rev. W. S. Caudle, pastor of Rankin Baptist Church, and the Rev. S. L. Riddle, pastor of Sharpe Road Baptist Mission. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Park, The body will remain at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home until the service.

In 1907, when he was just 15 years old, the Monongah coal mining disaster occurred on December 6th, happening at the Fairmont Coal Company’s No. 6 and No. 8 mines.. Over 361 miners were killed. Because there was no breathing apparatus at the time to help rescuers, recovery efforts were greatly hampered. It is considered the worst mining disaster in American history and led to government oversight in mining practices.
