Robert Steel 1886 - 1965

Robert Steel of Wedderburn Australia was born in 1886 to Robert Steel and Margaret Martha (Glass) Steel. He had siblings William Dalton Steel, Marian Isobel Al Thomas, John Steel, Margaret Steel, Dorothy Steel, and Kathleen Stephens. He married Ann Catherine Steel, and had children Margaret Winifred Steel, Robert Steel IV, John Steel, and Nancy Steel. Robert Steel died at age 79 years old in 1965 in Wedderburn.

    Wedderburn Express and Korongshire Advertiser 1914. A quiet wedding was celebrated at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Wedderburn, on Wednesday evening, when Mr. Robert Steel, eldest son of Mr.and Mrs Steel, of Wedderburn, was married to Miss Ann Catherine Hansen, only daughter of Mr. Emilus P. Hansen, of Wedderburn Junction.

In 1886, in the year that Robert Steel was born, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.

In 1892, by the time he was merely 6 years old, on January 1st, Ellis Island opened to process immigrants. 700 passed through on the first day - in the first year, 450,000 were processed. The processing center was originally a 3 story wooden building - with outbuildings - that burned down a few years later.
