Robert Steel of Wedderburn Australia was born in 1886 to Robert Steel and Margaret Martha (Glass) Steel. He had siblings William Dalton Steel, Marian Isobel Al Thomas, John Steel, Margaret Steel, Dorothy Steel, and Kathleen Stephens. He married Ann Catherine Steel, and had children Margaret Winifred Steel, Robert Steel IV, John Steel, and Nancy Steel. Robert Steel died at age 79 years old in 1965 in Wedderburn.

    Wedderburn Express and Korongshire Advertiser 1914. A quiet wedding was celebrated at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Wedderburn, on Wednesday evening, when Mr. Robert Steel, eldest son of Mr.and Mrs Steel, of Wedderburn, was married to Miss Ann Catherine Hansen, only daughter of Mr. Emilus P. Hansen, of Wedderburn Junction.

In 1886, in the year that Robert Steel was born, on October 28th, President Grover Cleveland officially dedicated the Statue of Liberty. A gift from France, the base for the statue had been built using donations from the American public. The unplanned but enthusiastic celebration after the dedication led to the first ticker tape parade.

In 1916, he was 30 years old when in June, the U.S. Congress authorized a plan to expand the armed forces over the next five years. Called the National Defense Act of 1916, the national law expanded the National Guard and Army (the Army added an aviation unit), created the Reserves, and gave the President expanded authority to federalize the National Guard. It also allowed the government to stockpile, in advance, materiel to be used in wartime.
