Robert's parents were Warren Steel and Delia E. Reilly. He is reported as being born in either Oakland or Berkeley California - both are in Alameda county, California. In the 1930 federal census, Robert was 11 and living with his parents in Marysville California on 11th St. He was attending school. Also in the household were his sister Margaret, age 8, and a lodger, Peggy Washmera, age 21. Father Warren was an attorney. Robert was a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy during World War 2. After he was discharged from the Navy, he married Margaret Angela “Peggy” Hauss Steel, who lived almost her entire life in Sutter county California. They were married for 51 years and had 10 children.
