Rodney James Anketell 1855 - 1937

Rodney James Anketell of Ballarat, City of Ballarat County, VIC Australia was born in 1855 in Sandhurst, City of Frankston County to Mary Coombs Anketell and William Anketell. He had siblings William Francis Anketell, Mary Jane Anketell Middleton, Sarah Eliza (Anketell) Macardy, Margaret Auketell, Ellen Anketell, and Catherine Anketell. He married Elizabeth Hunter Anketell in 1877, and had children William James Hunter Anketell, Margaret Elizabeth Ann Anketell, Janet Eleanor Jessie Anketell, Rodney John Stratford Anketell, and George Florence Anketell. Rodney Anketell died at age 81 years old on June 15, 1937 in Ballarat, City of Ballarat County.

In 1855, in the year that Rodney James Anketell was born, on March 3rd, Congress appropriated $30,000 to create the U.S. Camel Corps. The idea was to use camels as pack animals in the Southwest and 34 camels were bought. But the Army wasn't enthusiastic about the idea and after the Civil War the Camel Corps was entirely abandoned.

In 1873, at the age of 18 years old, Rodney was alive when on February 12th, The Coinage Act of 1873 was signed by President Ulysses S. Grant. It went into effect on April 1st and ended the use of gold and silver in the U.S. for currency - placing the country on the gold standard. The Act wasn't popular with everyone.
