He was the oldest of 3 boys with younger brothers Norman E Chares tand Rudolph Charest Jr. He lived in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts and at the age of 21 registered for the World War II draft on October 16, 1940 in Springfield. He later enlisted on October 14, 1941 and served in the US Navy until he was discharged on October 13, 1947. Roland was married to Hope Howlett (1919-1988) and they had two children together, Bonnie L Charest (1945-2010) and Robert Charest (1950-).
