Roland Joseph Charest was born on May 11, 1919 to parents Rudolph and Emma Charest in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He was the oldest of 3 boys with younger brothers Norman E Chares tand Rudolph Charest Jr. He lived in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts and at the age of 21 registered for the World War II draft on October 16, 1940 in Springfield. He later enlisted on October 14, 1941 and served in the US Navy until he was discharged on October 13, 1947. Roland was married to Hope Howlett (1919-1988) and they had two children together, Bonnie L Charest (1945-2010) and Robert Charest (1950-).

At the time he was 5' 10", 160 pounds, with light complexion, brown hair and blue eyes. Roland Charest later enlisted and served in the US Navy. He enlisted on October 14, 1941 and was discharged on October 13, 1947.
