Roland Theodore Charest was born on November 10, 1917, in Nashua, Hillsborough, New Hampshire, USA. He was the son of Cleophas Charest (1893-1953) and Blanche Ivonne Dansereau (born Sep 23, 1899). He had two siblings, Evelyn Alberta Charest (1921-2016) and Donald Robert Charest (1922-1998).
Charest graduated from Nashua High School in 1937 and was an active member of the Glee Club.
On March 3, 1941, Roland enlisted in the United States Army in Boston, Massachusetts. He served in the Infantry branch of the United States Army. During his service, Charest sustained injuries to his Tarsal bone, specifically the Astragalus bone, caused by Artillery Shell fragments. He underwent a Sequestrectomy as part of his medical treatment. Charest was later discharged on December 4, 1945.
