Honesdale Woman Sentenced for Murder Plot
HONESDALE, WAYNE COUNTY - Nearly one year after she conspired to kill her husband Ronald, a Wayne County woman learned her fate Wednesday afternoon. 38-year-old Patricia Luyster was sentenced to between 15 and 34 years behind bars in state prison. Luyster made a tearful apology minutes before Judge Raymond Hamill handed down the sentence.

"She willingly plotted with her 17-year-old daughter. She knew it was going on, coordinated it and tied it with the birthday of one of her daughters," Wayne County District Attorney Michael Lehutsky said.

Ronald Luyster was shot in the chest with a 22-caliber rifle outside his Honesdale home as he came back from dinner last April. Patricia said the plot came only after years of physical and emotional abuse from a man addicted to cocaine. "Despite the batterings, she had her choices. She opted to select the choice of murder as opposed to the other alternatives and in a civilized society, you cannot stand by and accept that as an appropriate end," Lehutsky said.

Before handing down his sentence, Judge Hamill had harsh words for Patricia Luyster. He said she could have stopped the murder and her fingerprints were all over the crime. Even after sentencing, Luyster remained quiet with the media, but inside, she admitted making mistakes and took full responsibility for her actions. Members of the domestic violence group Safe Haven on Pike County, who have worked with Luyster, spoke on her behalf.

"In her defense, we do feel that Pat did do her best and because of a lack of resources at the time, she was not successfully able to leave a situation that she would have desperately loved to," Cynthia Edwards said. "I have seen a lot of criminal defendants who reach for the bible after they're caught and facing judgment of their own and there's a lot of merit in that... but there's a lot of times when it's a matter of convenience," Lehutsky said.

Besides Patricia Luyster, her daughter Carissa has also pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Commit Murder. Carissa's boyfriend, Cody Steich, who pulled the trigger, pleaded guilty to third degree murder. Both will be sentenced in May.

Springbrook man shot and killed
Wife, daughter, daughter's boyfriend accused of plotting to kill him

Honesdale - A Springbrook man was killed, and his wife, daughter and the daughter's boyfriend are in jail, accused of conspiring to murder him. Ronald Luyster, 41, or 792 State Road 690, was shot about 11 p.m. Saturday outside his wife's house at 260 Ridge Street in this borough, according to state police. He died about 12:11 a.m. Sunday in the emergency room at Wayne Memorial Hospital, hospital public relations director Lisa Champeau said.

Patricia Luyster, 37, and her daughter, Clarissa Luyster, 17, conspired to kill Ronald Luyster because of ongoing domestic violence, the police report said. Clarissa Luyster's boyfriend, Cody Steich, 18, 175 Creek Drive, Prompton, also was arrested. Steich hid in the garage at Patricia Luyster's house and shot Ronald Luyster when he arrived, police said. Ronald Luyster was shot once in the right side of the chest with a .2 caliber bullet.

Steich left the scene and threw the rifle in am abandoned area near the house, according to the police report. Police provided no information on how they learned of the shooting, who called emergency services to take Ronald Luyster to the hospital or where and how the Luyster women and Steich were apprehended. Attempts to reach state police at the substation in Honesdale and at the troop headquarters in Dunmore were unsuccessful Sunday night.

Patricia Luyster and her daughter were being held Sunday in the Lackawanna County Prison, according to a corrections officer who answered the phone there. He said the women are charged with one count each of criminal homicide and conspiracy to commit murder. Wayne County Prison officials refused to say whether Steich was being held there.

Borough police and the Wayne County District Attorney's Office also took part in the investigation. Attempts to reach District Attorney Michael Lehutsky Sunday were unsuccessful. The three were supposed to be arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Ron Edwards, of Lakewood, according to state police. When contacted at home Sunday evening by Times-Shamrock Newspapers, Edwards said, "I don't take work calls at home" and hung up. Wayne County Coroner Carol R. Lienert said an autopsy was performed on Ronald Luyster on Sunday. SHe said there was only one bullet entry wound in his chest and no exit wound.

No further information was available as of press time.
